Deputy Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said the Biden administration was aware of a ransomware attack targeting the world’s largest meat producer JBS, which has factories in the US, Canada and Australia.

Jean-Pierre stated that the fight against ransomware is a White House priority, and new tools will be developed to monitor crypto transactions linked to hacks, in line with efforts to protect against such attacks.

“President Biden has launched a strategic review to address the growing ransomware threat. The first is the distribution of ransomware infrastructure and actors working closely with the private sector. Second, build an international coalition to hold the countries hosting the hackers accountable, as well as take criminal action, expand cryptocurrency analysis to track and review USG’s ransomware policies.”

The FBI associates the JBS hack with a Russia-based group known as REvil or Sodinokibi, which has also been involved in previous malware attacks against computer manufacturer Acer, Apple supplier Quanta Computer and currency exchange Travelex.

“The White House has contacted the Russian government directly regarding this issue and has sent the message that the states responsible do not harbor ransomware criminals.”
